In search of…One Thing

By Gary · Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Part of my journey in finding my “One Thing” (which is different for everyone and it changes depending on stage of life and other variables) was learning about people, life, what motivated me, etc. Along the way I learned about a number of things I did not want to do, and some that I put on my absolutely will do list.

I also began to recognize the importance of people and “fit”. One of the things which people struggle most with is change – people don’t change until the price of not changing is too great. It is soooo much easier to be comfortable and to excel when you “fit” with your surroundings, the people around you, and when you are comfortable in your own skin.

I saw City Slickers again for the umpteenth time. And it reminded me yet again of the journeys we are all on. Some of us consciously and some, well – life just happens. While I was sitting on the couch and daydreaming, out of the corner of my eye I saw one of my favorite movie vignettes and I faded back into the movie:

Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is?
Mitch: No What?

Curly: This [Holds up one finger]

Mitch: Your Finger?

Curly: Just one thing – You stick to that and nothing else means Sh*t

Mitch:That’s great, But what’s the one thing?

Curly: That’s what ‘you’ gotta figure out

From time to time, that “one thing” has changed for me as I have taken on new challenges, learned more, and I hope evolved. I love the journey. I welcome the gifts that the search brings. And all those ones add up. The journey continues.
